We were also able to reconstruct the matrimonial proceedings conducted before the newly established ecclesiastical marriage courts based on surviving case files. In contrast to the Viennese Magistrate’s Office, which most likely returned the evidence submitted by the disputing parties to the respective spouses in the vast majority of cases. The files of the Marriage court of St. Pölter presumably contain all documents that were produced by or for the marriage court: from the records of complaints concerning medical certificates, to the records of the questioning of witnesses, court summons and correspondence with secular authorities right up to the verdict. The assignment of the files to the “correct” proceedings was facilitated by the fact that the regulation of the consequences of a divorce had not been transferred to the Catholic marriage courts.
